A family assembly is a structured meeting that brings together the extended family, often including spouses, adult children, and sometimes older teenagers, to discuss the family's financial life, shared values, and long-term direction. Unlike a family council, which typically involves a smaller elected or appointed group, the assembly is inclusive by design—everyone with a stake in the family's future is invited to participate.
For families managing substantial wealth, the assembly serves a purpose beyond information-sharing. It creates a forum where rising generations can ask questions, voice concerns, and begin to understand the responsibilities that accompany inherited or shared resources. Families sometimes use the assembly to introduce younger members to concepts covered in an investment policy statement or to explain how an investment committee functions on their behalf.
A common confusion is treating the family assembly as purely ceremonial—a reunion with a financial slide deck. In practice, assemblies that function well tend to have a stated agenda, ground rules for discussion, and some mechanism for following up on questions raised.
