Collateral (Maintenance) Call

Definizione

A lender's demand that a borrower deposit additional collateral or repay part of a loan because the pledged assets have fallen below the required minimum value.

When a family uses securities-based lending or a margin account to borrow against a portfolio, the lender sets a maintenance threshold — a minimum ratio of collateral value to loan balance. If falling markets push the portfolio below that threshold, the lender issues a maintenance call (sometimes called a margin call), requiring the borrower to restore the ratio promptly, often within one to three business days.

The consequences of not meeting a call can be severe. If a borrower cannot post additional cash or securities in time, the lender may liquidate portfolio positions unilaterally — at whatever prices exist at that moment — to bring the loan back into compliance. Families sometimes discover this is the opposite of when they would choose to sell, since market stress that triggered the call may mean selling at depressed prices.

Consider a hypothetical family that pledged a diversified portfolio as collateral for an illustrative $5 million loan. A sharp equity decline reduces the portfolio's value, breaching the maintenance level. The lender demands an illustrative $800,000 in additional collateral within 48 hours. If the family cannot respond quickly, forced sales follow. Readers exploring this risk in broader context may find the full discussion of securities-based lending useful, and a qualified financial professional should evaluate any borrowing arrangement before it is established.
