Multi-Family Office (MFO)

Definizione

A multi-family office is a professional firm that delivers family-office-style services: investment oversight, tax coordination, estate planning support, and more, to several unrelated wealthy families on a shared-cost basis.

An MFO offers families access to the depth and integration of a family office without requiring each family to build and staff its own organization. By spreading fixed costs, covering talented investment professionals, technology platforms, and compliance infrastructure, across multiple client families, an MFO can be economically attractive for families whose wealth is substantial but perhaps not large enough to justify the full expense of a single-family office. This tradeoff is often weighed at wealth levels discussed at /wealth-at-50-million and /wealth-at-100-million.

MFOs vary considerably in ownership structure and fee model. Some are independent and owned by their principals; others are affiliated with banks, trust companies, or other financial institutions. Some charge flat retainers; others charge as a percentage of assets under management; many use a blend. Understanding how the MFO is compensated, and whether any conflicts of interest exist, is an important part of evaluating any particular firm.

A hypothetical scenario: two families, each with meaningful but not enormous wealth, share an MFO that provides consolidated reporting, manager oversight, tax-document coordination, and philanthropic administration. Each family gets a dedicated relationship team while sharing the cost of the underlying investment research platform and operational staff.

A common confusion is treating all MFOs as equivalent. Service depth, client-to-staff ratios, investment philosophy, and regulatory registration differ widely. Families evaluating an MFO should ask specifically which services are provided in-house versus outsourced, and how many families share each relationship team.
