Premium / Discount to NAV

Definizione

Premium or discount to NAV describes whether a fund's market price trades above (premium) or below (discount) the per-share value of the assets it holds.

Net asset value (NAV) is calculated by dividing a fund's total assets minus liabilities by its number of outstanding shares. For vehicles like closed-end funds or certain exchange-traded funds, the market price is set by trading activity and can diverge from NAV. A fund trading at a five percent premium means buyers are paying five percent more than the underlying holdings are worth on paper; a five percent discount means they are paying less.

For wealthy families, premium-discount dynamics matter in several practical ways. Buying a fund at a significant premium concentrates risk in the valuation gap closing — if the premium shrinks, the investor loses value even if the underlying portfolio is flat. Conversely, buying at a persistent discount might appear attractive, but the reasons for that discount deserve scrutiny: structural leverage, illiquid holdings, or thin trading volume can all explain why a discount exists and persists.

A common confusion is treating a discount as free money. Markets are not always inefficient; a stubborn discount often signals something the broader market has already priced in. Monitoring premium-discount history over time — not just a point-in-time snapshot — and understanding what drives it are essential steps. Professionals supporting performance evaluation can help families interpret these dynamics in context.
