Revenue Bond

Definizione

A revenue bond is a municipal security whose principal and interest are repaid solely from the income generated by a specific project or facility, such as a toll road or hospital.

Unlike a general obligation bond, a revenue bond carries no pledge of the issuer's taxing power. Repayment depends entirely on whether the underlying project produces enough cash flow — toll receipts, utility payments, airport fees, hospital revenues, and so on. Because the bondholder's safety net is narrower, revenue bonds typically offer somewhat higher yields than comparable GO bonds, reflecting that additional uncertainty.

Revenue bonds represent a large share of the overall municipal bond market. Families and their advisors evaluating this segment must assess the specific revenue stream: Is demand for the facility stable? Are there competing alternatives? Is usage contractually guaranteed by a government entity or dependent on the public? A hypothetical example might be a bond issued to finance a regional water utility — essential-service demand tends to be relatively stable — versus one backing a speculative new sports arena.

A frequent misunderstanding is assuming that a municipal label automatically implies tax exemption. Most revenue bonds do pay federally tax-exempt interest, but certain categories — such as some private-activity bonds — may trigger the alternative minimum tax for certain taxpayers. A qualified tax attorney or CPA must verify the tax treatment of any specific bond before a family relies on that exemption. Credit analysis is equally important; the project's financial projections deserve careful scrutiny.
