Single-Family Office (SFO)

Definitie

A single-family office is a private organization owned and operated by one family solely to manage that family's wealth, affairs, and legacy.

An SFO is, in effect, a private company whose only client is the family that owns it. It typically employs investment professionals, accountants, legal coordinators, and administrative staff under one roof, giving the family direct control over hiring, strategy, cost, and confidentiality. This level of customization is the SFO's defining advantage. Families often begin evaluating this structure at wealth levels explored at /wealth-at-100-million and above, though the calculus depends heavily on complexity rather than a single dollar threshold.

Because the SFO is a standalone employer, it carries genuine operating costs — salaries, benefits, office space, technology, compliance, and professional liability. These fixed costs must be weighed against the value of integrated, dedicated service. A hypothetical family with diverse holdings across private markets, public securities, real estate, and operating businesses might find that an SFO pays for itself in coordination savings and tax efficiency alone; a family with simpler holdings might not.

Governance is a serious consideration. An SFO requires leadership — often a chief investment officer or chief executive — whose incentives and competence must be evaluated carefully. The family is, after all, the board. Investment committees and formal investment policy statements are common tools for keeping an SFO disciplined and accountable over time.

A common confusion is assuming an SFO eliminates the need for outside advisers. In practice, most SFOs engage external managers, attorneys, and specialists regularly — the SFO's role is to select and oversee them, not replace them entirely.
