Stewardship

Definitie

The philosophy that current holders of family wealth are caretakers of resources intended to benefit future generations, not simply owners free to consume them.

Stewardship reframes the relationship between a family and its wealth. Rather than treating assets as property to be used as the current generation sees fit, a stewardship orientation holds that wealth carries an obligation to those who will inherit it—and sometimes to the broader community the family is part of. This perspective is common among families that have held substantial wealth across multiple generations and is often embedded in family mission statements or governance documents.

In practice, stewardship shapes decisions at every level. A family operating under a stewardship philosophy might prioritize capital preservation more explicitly, maintain a detailed investment policy statement, or establish a family foundation that reflects shared charitable values. A hypothetical third-generation family might articulate stewardship principles formally so that incoming spouses and young adult members understand the family's expectations before participating in governance.

A common confusion is equating stewardship with excessive conservatism—hoarding assets out of obligation while living too frugally. Stewardship does not require self-denial; it requires intentionality. Families can pursue growth, enjoy their wealth, and still operate as stewards, provided decisions are made with an awareness of their long-term consequences. The concept is explored practically in discussions of wealth at the $100 million level and beyond, where governance structures tend to formalize these values.
