Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS)

定义

Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities are U.S. government bonds whose principal value is adjusted periodically in line with a government inflation index, protecting purchasing power over time.

Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities — known universally as TIPS — are a category of Treasury securities designed to address one of the core long-term risks facing any bond investor: the erosion of purchasing power by inflation. The principal of a TIPS bond rises when the relevant government price index rises and falls when it falls, though the security is structured so that the final redemption value will not fall below the original face amount. Interest is paid at a fixed coupon rate, but because that rate is applied to the inflation-adjusted principal, the actual dollar coupon payment also moves with inflation.

Wealthy families with long time horizons — foundations, dynastic trusts, or individuals planning multigenerational transfers — sometimes evaluate TIPS as a component of their capital preservation strategy or within a broader discussion of inflation-sensitive assets. A hypothetical family trust designed to fund educational expenses decades into the future might consider TIPS as a way to maintain the real value of a fixed-income allocation over time.

A frequently misunderstood feature is "phantom income": in taxable accounts, the inflation adjustment to principal is treated as taxable income in the year it accrues, even though the investor does not receive that adjustment in cash until maturity. This makes TIPS potentially more tax-efficient when held inside tax-advantaged accounts. A qualified CPA should evaluate the specific tax implications for any family's situation, as the interplay between TIPS, account type, and overall tax position can be meaningful.
