Treasury Bill (T-bill)

定義

A Treasury bill is a short-term U.S. government debt obligation, maturing in one year or less, sold at a discount to face value and redeemed at full face value at maturity.

Treasury bills — universally called T-bills — are the shortest-maturity instruments in the U.S. government's debt toolkit. Rather than paying a periodic coupon, they are issued at a price below their face value; the difference between the purchase price and the amount received at maturity represents the investor's return. Because they are backed by the full faith and credit of the federal government and mature quickly, they are widely regarded as one of the closest approximations to a "risk-free" short-term instrument available in U.S. markets.

For wealthy families, T-bills frequently serve as a liquidity reserve or a temporary parking place for capital between longer-term deployments — for example, proceeds from a business sale awaiting reinvestment. They also appear in the context of liquidity allocation discussions and as a benchmark against which other short-term returns are measured. Interest income from T-bills is subject to federal income tax but is exempt from state and local income taxes, which can be a meaningful consideration in high-tax states.

A common confusion is conflating T-bills with Treasury notes or Treasury bonds, which carry longer maturities and pay regular coupons. T-bills carry essentially no duration risk — the sensitivity to interest-rate changes that affects longer bonds — precisely because their maturities are so short. Families should verify current yields and auction schedules with their advisor or custodian, as rates fluctuate continuously with market conditions.
